As the world dons its autumnal cloak, you might find your mood mirroring the quiet, introspective nature of the season. Autumn, a time rich in nostalgia and thoughtful reflection, is deeply connected to the Earth element. This is a period when the vibrancy of life seems to mellow, the air turns crisp, and the landscape transforms into a palette of warm, earthy tones.
At The Crafty Herbalist Academy, we understand that our inherent constitution – our strengths, vulnerabilities, and unique journeys – is influenced by the natural rhythms of life and the elements that surround us. Earth, our fundamental element, requires the harmony of Fire, Air, and Water to maintain balance.
Individuals with a predominant Earth constitution may find themselves naturally inclining towards a melancholic state, particularly during the colder seasons. This can manifest as a feeling of being emotionally ‘stuck’, resulting in low energy, apprehension, or a sense of being overwhelmed.
However, melancholy does not equate to depression. Those who are melancholic often cherish their solitude, using it as a time for deep contemplation and connection with what truly matters to them.
To uplift the melancholic spirit, engaging in fulfilling projects, outdoor activities like yoga, dancing, or nature walks, and incorporating light, nourishing foods and herbal remedies can be particularly beneficial. These practices should aim to be joyful, invigorating, and cleansing.
Spotlight on Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
Fennel, with its golden blooms and unique aniseed flavor, has been a revered plant across centuries. Hildegard von Bingen, in the 12th century, praised Fennel for its health-promoting qualities, noting its ability to bring happiness and wellness.
In my practice, I often recommend Fennel for its uplifting and digestive benefits. It’s particularly effective in easing symptoms like heartburn, gas, and bloating, and has been known to aid in weight management and even possess aphrodisiac qualities. Fennel is a gentle yet potent herb, perfect for those experiencing melancholy, as it warms and moves the spirit without being overwhelming.
Autumnal Tea Blend Recipe
I’d like to share a cherished tea blend that celebrates Fennel and its harmonious companions. This mixture is designed to bring warmth and joy to your autumn days. However, please be mindful of any medication interactions, particularly with St John’s Wort, and adjust the recipe as necessary.
- 10g dried Fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare)
- 10g dried St John’s Wort flowering tops (Hypericum perforatum)
- 10g dried Chamomile flowers (Matricaria recutita)
- 10g dried Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)
- 5g dried Marigold flowers (Calendula officinalis)
- 5g crushed Cardamom pods (Elettaria cardamomum)
- Combine all herbs in a mix and store in an airtight container away from light and heat.
- To prepare, steep a heaped tablespoon of the blend in 200ml of boiling water for at least 20 minutes, covered.
- Strain and sweeten as desired before enjoying.
